Web presence is a stage, to which all people need to go through in this era of Web 2.0. The web 2.0 is enabling people to become prosumers where they produces and consumes at the same time. As Papacharissi (2011) claims: “The process of self-presentation becomes an ever-evolving cycle through which individual is presented, compared, adjust, or defended against a constellation of social, cultural, economic, or political realities.” .The web presence is a way of controlling an online profile which is accessible to public and to let people know about you. As part of the final assignment, we have to create our Web presence and we are also creating our internet footprints and digital shadow which are two topics that were discussed in class. I choose a website as a central note and twitter, pinterest and Facebook social networks as contributing nodes. The topics that I have chosen are photography and philosophy of life.
Photography is my passion and what I like about taking photos is capturing special moments as Photos help us sustain moments in time that might otherwise be lost to us forever. Sunset photography is one of the most common, but most diverse subjects in the realm of landscapes. No sunsets are ever alike, and the amount of unique environments and compositions are endless. All the photos that will be uploaded are photos that I took. As for Philosophy, it is mainly, quotes from which I inspired myself as some quotes are very meaningful and can motivate someone for the day.
The central node that I choose is Weebly which is a web-hosting service that gives everyone a surprisingly easy way to create a unique and free website. I thought it is a best way to start as it is easy to use and to display photos. The template I choose is simple and clear as I want to put more emphasis on the photos that will be displayed on the site. The color chosen is grey as it gives the sober aspect to the web site. Web sites are very common and Weebly is very user-friendly; one can easily customize by getting access to the variety of fonts, color and other visual enhancing effects that are available while building the website. Leaver (2014): “The web emphasises on communication, collaboration and Information sharing.”
The first contributing node i chose is Facebook. As I already have a Facebook account, I decided to create a Facebook page where I would upload my photos and post Quotes. Facebook is a web 2.0 platform which is well -known and easy to use. It is a multi- way communication platform where people can like, comment or even post videos. Papacharissi (2011) claim that “Social networks site enable individuals to construct a member’s profile, connects to known and potential friends and view members’ connections. By creating a Facebook page, I can invite people to participate by liking and commenting on the photos and quotes that I will post. When engaging in my page they are creating a digital shadow by liking and commenting on my photos and quotes. It also makes the page more visible as other people can have access to it. For the Facebook page I chose one of my photos to upload as a cover page I wanted to personalise the Facebook page with my own photos as I took photography as theme.
My second node, is Twitter, it is easy to use and people can follow me. It allows me to customise my page with a design of my choice and to follow people with the same interest as me. For example; in my twitter account I follow Inspirational Quotes which tweets each minutes. Twitter is a “micro-blogging application” (Leaver, 2014) which enables people to express themselves but also the sharing of information is easily as people get news or the post of their followers instantly. As I chose to do quotes, twitter is a good platform to tweet the quotes that I find inspiring and meaningful. People can favored or retweet the quotes that they like. Solove (2007), claims that “we can communicate and share ideas in unprecedented way. These developments are revolutionizing our self-expression and enhancing our freedom.” Twitter is a way to communicate through words and also photos. I decided to personalise the page by placing one of my photos as background.
Pinterest is my last contributing as I particularly like this platform even if I came to discover it during the web assignment. Pinterest is a very interesting platform where people can create boards and pin the photos they like on their boards. They can also follow boards about subjects which they like. In my account, I follow photography boards and Quotes boards. Pinterest allow that user to upload pictures on their account and I see this platform easy to use where you can follow your friends and the topic in which you are interested. What makes pinterest fun is the way people can pin photos or follow the boards that people find interesting or people can find their friends having with the same interest. By linking Pinterest to my central node, am creating an interest to the audience in terms of visual.
All these platforms helped me in the creation of my Internet footprint and my digital shadow. I will invite people to follow me and also, they will participate by commenting or liking my photos or the quotes. The web presence allows a control and flow of information about us and the information we put online. My central node and the three contributing nodes represents the identity that I have been forming when creating the web presence. I want to create more of a visual inspiration but also to show people that the little and simple things in life can be appreciated if people will just take the time to stop for just a moment and take a look around them or to let them be touched by my meaningful quotes that will simply put a smile on their face.
